Women's Affairs Committee

In 1990, it's establishment was instructed to all Iranian provinces as part of social councils committees for the empowerment of women in all aspects of the socitey. In 1992, the Office of Women's Socio - Cultural Affairs was set up in the Ministry of Interior to coordinate all provincial women's affairs committees.

Women's affairs committees have the following tasks:

  • Studying women's issues and problems, prioritizing them to help socio - economic, cultural planners of the country,
  • Acquiring data related to women,
  • Assessing women's - related research in academic centers and offices and proposing research topics,
  • Identifying regions' possibilities and maximizing its utilization by the women,
  • Empowerment of women in the society,
  • Managerial plans related to women and assessing them.
Governors should appoint a female adviser in each province. There are 202 such committees in the country, 178 of which are related to towns. The committee's provincial branches are informed about each other's activities by the central secretariat located in the governor's office. They help in the macro - planning of the province through using these experiences.

In 1995 a plan to form socio - cultural centers was approved as the executive arm of the committees, for the women's affairs committees has a policy -making role. Some 63 centers have been formed in provinces and towns. The centers activities differ according to regions, but all centers have common cores such as:

  1. Scientific and vocational training
  2. Artistic training
  3. Consulting and social work
  4. Extra - curricular activities
  5. Logistics and secondary services
