Day & Night Aamal for Ashura
NIGHT OF A’ASHOORA Imam
Jaa-far As Saadiq (A.S.) had said: A
large army of Yazid, under the command of Umar bin Saad, surrounded Imam
Husayn, his family and friends, from all sides on the 9th of
Muharram, shouting for joy and uttering songs of triumph, in view of the
presence of countless soldiers armed with swords, lances, arrows and
stones, on their sides, against a handful of 72, among whom there were 90
years old men and six month old child. Imam Husayn (A.S.) at that time had
no support from any quarter; forsaken he was amid a most extraordinary and
unheard of situation. On
the night of Aashoora, the Holy Imam had invited his companions and
relatives to sit together after Esha prayers, and hear his last address.
As soon as the prayers came to an end they sat around him. He
said: Brothers!
It is a misjudgment if, in one’s heart of hearts, anyone expects
to witness my victory in tomorrow’s battle and gather the fruit of
conquest. I tell you, in
clear words, the enemy will slay me, beyond the shadow of a doubt, in a
manner that will make blood run cold.
Abbas, my brother, his both hands cut off, shall be killed on the
slope of the shore, running along the river.
A lance will pass through the heart of my son, Ali Akbar.
The hooves of the enemy’s cavalry will crush the wounded body of
my brother’s son, Qasim. Likewise
whoso stays with me, be he a kin or friend, will be killed in cold blood.
I tell you, beforehand, an arrow, taking aim, on purpose, with
afterthought, shall hit the throat of my six month old son, Ali Asghar.
He shall die on the spot, in my arms.
My son, Ali now in high fever, shall alone weather the storm, and
bear through the aftermath, the worst and the meanest abuse, along with
the womenfolk of the “Aali Muhammad.” Friends!
Do not break your heart nor have qualms on account of the
obligation of loyalty to me and my cause, you had declared upon oath.
I, willingly, set you free from the sworn pledge.
Leave me alone to that which lies in wait for me tomorrow.
They will go after me and no other.
The night is obscure. You
can cut and run and disappear in the darkness unseen. Then
the Holy Imam asked his brother, Abbas, to put out the candles, to let the
deserters show their heels and save their neck. In the darkness many escaped.
The lamps again made a light and a final group of holy 72 was
sitting here and there calm and quiet, willingly ready to meet the certain
death next morning when the “Dibh’in A’z’eem, as promised by the
Almighty, would become a fact. (1)

Recite
“Ziyaarat” of Imam Husayn (A.S.) (6)
Tears come to our eyes as the dry yellow leafs drop on the ground
in autumn, it is an instinctive self-regulation; (we) weep, mourn, and
cry; in the height of our love for the Holy Imam some of us scrape and cut
ourselves (not others) to feel the pain and hurt the martyrs of Kerbala
suffered on the 10th of Muharram in 61 Hijra.
In no way there is any hint of self-torture or show off, as Oways
Qaranee broke all his teeth when he heard the news that in the battle of
Uhad his “beloved”, the Holy Prophet (A.S.) had lost a couple of
teeth. It is the domain of
love and passionate attachment, deep and abiding devotedness like the jump
Prophet Ibraheem (A.S.) took into the blazing fire. (7)
Invoke Allah to lay curse upon the
killers of Imam Husayn (A.S.) his family and friends: “Allahummal-A’n
Qatalatal H’usayn Wa Awlaadihee Wa As’H’aabihee.” (O
Allah condemn and lay a curse upon the killers of Husayn (A.S.), his
family and friends.) and
say: Yaa
Laytanee Kuntu Ma-A’Kum Fa-Afooza Fawzan A’z’eemaa Would
that I were at your disposal, and had attained the much cherished success. (8)
Comfort and console each other with: Aa’-z’amallaahu
Ujooranaa Wa Ujoorakum Bi-Mus’aabinaa Bil H’usayn A’layhis Salaam Wa
Ja-A’lanaa Wa Iyyaakum Minat T’aalibeena Bi-Thaarihee Ma-a’
Waliyyihil Imaamil Mahdiyy Min Aali Muh’Ammdin A’layhimus Salaam Much
and highly satisfying is the recompense from Allah for us (when) we are
with Husayn, (A.S.) in his sorrow and grief; And
surely He will make us and you to be among the good and worthy who will
assist His cause and purpose under the leadership of His friend and
representative the rightly Guided Guide (Imam Al Mahdi), the direct
descendent of Muhammad (A.S.). (9) In the evening at Asr time, eat simple food in small quantity, after praying Asr salaat, because the whole world may glorify the Holy Imam in their own mood and style, but for us it is a very private grief.
